Hospice Volunteering
Committed to excellence, our volunteers have a deep respect for the unique needs of terminally ill patients, as well as their families. Hospice volunteers have a profound impact on the lives of those they serve. Hospice volunteers understand the challenges that patients and their families confront when coping with terminal illness, and provide ongoing support and reassurance. From household tasks to simply holding a hand, volunteers have the opportunity to help in many ways.
All of our hospice volunteers are trained on the philosophy of hospice care and on understanding the responsibilities and duties of caring for terminally ill patients and their families. The training is holistic – covering the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of death and dying.
Many of our volunteers have had a first-hand experience with a family member or close friend who has had a life-limiting illness. This experience often enables the volunteer to be especially supportive and sensitive to both the patient’s and the family’s needs. Volunteer training gives the self-confidence needed to feel comfortable in the hospice office or in a patient’s home.
We always welcome caring people who are looking to truly make a difference by becoming a hospice volunteer. Volunteers are an integral part of our hospice team. Volunteers can serve in a variety of ways including:
Companion Volunteers
Companion volunteers are our patient care volunteers. They provide companionship to the patient and a much-needed respite to the caregiver. Companion volunteers are an integral part of our hospice team. Volunteers can help by making friendly visits, reading to patients, writing letters or running errands. However, the most important gift a volunteer can offer is just being there to listen, share quiet moments of contemplation or lend a strong shoulder for support.
Bereavement Volunteers
Our bereavement volunteers are available to offer support to the families and friends of deceased patients. During the grieving process, the bereavement volunteer is an invaluable resource, especially for those who lack a solid support network.
Service Volunteers
Our service volunteers assist our hospice team by performing administrative duties like typing, addressing cards, organizing newsletters, packets, manual and performing other clerical responsibilities.
EPOCH Hospice Care is always looking for committed volunteers to become part of our hospice team. Becoming a hospice volunteer is a truly rewarding experience – an experience appreciated by many. Volunteers may be needed in a patient’s home, in a long-term care or assisted living facility.
