Book club to discuss ‘Orphan Train’ and ‘The Girls of Atomic City’ at Boylston Place (July 11, 25)

CHESTNUT HILL – EPOCH Independent and Assisted Living at Boylston Place will host two book club meetings with Gail Rice on select Fridays in July at 11:15 a.m. On July 11, Rice will discuss Christina Baker Kline’s best-seller “Orphan Train.” The novel tells the story of an elderly Irish immigrant Vivian – who, as a child, was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other orphans – and the orphan Molly Ayer who helps Vivian uncover the mysteries of her past. The novel draws on the history of the trains that carried more than 200,000 abandoned children from the East Coast to the Midwest between 1824 and 1929.

BREWSTER—EPOCH Assisted Living at Brewster Place will host its annual fish fry fundraiser for the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance on Friday, July 25 at 4 p.m. Former fisherman and CCCFA member Ray Kane will discuss the current condition of Cape Cod’s fishing industry and how to promote a healthy marine environment. Stick around after the presentation for a fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend to this fundraising event. Clarinetist Linda Poland and pianist/singer Alan Pearlmutter will perform a variety of musical selections representative of Klezmer dance music, Israeli songs, and old-time Yiddish favorites. Poland is a clarinetist with the New Bedford MA Symphony, a freelance performer and a clarinet instructor. Boylston Place book club to discuss ‘The Astronaut Wives Club’ and ‘Suspicion’ (Aug. 8, 22)

EPOCH Independent and Assisted Living at Boylston Place will host two book club meetings with Gail Rice on select Fridays in August at 11 a.m. On August 8, Rice will discuss Lily Koppel’s “The Astronaut Wives Club,” the true story of the women who stood behind America’s Mercury Seven astronauts, their rise to fame, and their ensuing friendship that would withstand the test of time.

On August 22, the group will discuss “Suspicion,” the latest novel from the New York Times bestselling author Joseph Finder. “Suspicion” revolves around single father Danny Goodman. After Goodman accepts a $50,000 loan from one of the wealthiest men in Boston, the DEA tracks him down and forces him to choose between going to court on false drug charges or going undercover on a dangerous mission. Art opening with Maria Brodeur at EPOCH at Melbourne (Aug. 12)

EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne will host an art opening and reception for local photographer Maria Brodeur on Tuesday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. Primarily a nature photographer, Broduer frequently captures striking images of her travels throughout the country. In addition to photography, Brodeur is a registered nurse case manager at Berkshire Medical Center, the author of three books, and a singer in several local choruses. On August 22, the group will discuss “Suspicion,” the latest novel from the New York Times bestselling author Joseph Finder. “Suspicion” revolves around single father Danny Goodman. After Goodman accepts a $50,000 loan from one of the wealthiest men in Boston, the DEA tracks him down and forces him to choose between going to court on false drug charges or going undercover on a dangerous mission. Lewis tended the Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport for 50 years, during which time she received many medals and honors for rescuing 18 people. Following the film, Gagnon will discuss the making of her work and answer questions.

Gagnon is a writer, award-winning journalist, a director, producer and the founder of Goodnight Irene Productions: An Indie-Documentary Film Company.
