Learn about painter John James Audubon at EPOCH on the East Side

PROVIDENCE—EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side will host a discussion of the work of painter and naturalist John James Audubon and his relation to American landscape painting at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10. Audubon was an ornithologist who documented American birds in unprecedented detail. The Audubon Society was named in his honor. The presentation is part of EPOCH’s “Art Stories” series.

‘Embers’ by Sandor Marai topic of book club discussion at EPOCH

Location: EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side

PROVIDENCE—The monthly book club at EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side is reading “Embers” by Sandor Marai. The novel tells the story of two former best friends who meet again after not speaking for four decades and explores the causes of the rift. The discussion of the best-selling book will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14. Participation in the book club is free and open to the public.

Luke Jackson to perform at EPOCH on the East Side

Location: EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side

PROVIDENCE—Luke Jackson, energetic lead singer of the World Premier Band from Boston, will return to EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, to perform a solo show of standards. Jackson and the World Premier Band have toured Canada, Japan and Korea, performing music of the ‘90s and today with funk, dance, originals and R&B.

Classical pianist Shuann Chai to perform at EPOCH on the East Side

PROVIDENCE—Shuann Chai, an engaging and critically acclaimed pianist, will return to EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. Her repertoire includes works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and other classical composers. She has performed across the U.S., England, Norway and the Netherlands, and has been featured in live performance on WGBH Boston.

Learn about John Brown and slave trade at EPOCH on the East Side

PROVIDENCE—Dr. Morgan Grefe, The Rhode Island Historical Society's Director of Education and Public Programs, will discuss John Brown’s involvement in the slave trade at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at EPOCH Assisted Living on the East Side. Her one-hour lecture will focus on a 1764 voyage from Providence to Africa made by a ship named Sally. Both Brown and his brothers invested in this ship and in the possibilities for success and fortune represented by this risky business venture.
